NBA Victor Wembanyama et Fred Weis

Facing Canada in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games, the French team has no room for error.

Former player Fred Weis set the tone before the match with a particularly resounding speech.

After a complicated group stage marked by two narrow victories against Brazil and Japan, then a carnage suffered against Germany, France managed to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games.

But one thing seems clear: if the level of play does not increase immediately, the door awaits the Tricolores.

Now, it is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Canada that stands up to Les Bleus and the hosts of the competition are not favorites.

On the contrary, because their opponents have been much more convincing since the start of the tournament… Questioned by journalists, Vincent Collet summed up the situation in a single sinister sentence:

A normal match will not be enough, we will have to achieve something.

A rather worrying prediction from the coach who may be gambling on this match.

For his part, Fred Weis did not hesitate to cut to the chase in an interview with Eurosport, revealing the keys to coming out on top against the Canadians:

Constantly booed, Joel Embiid honest about the French public: “It’s not…

Given our game, I give us a 20% chance. And I’m being nice. For me, there are three very important points.

The first concerns Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

He is the playmaker of this team, the boy who creates for others, he is the one who will score the points when necessary.

We absolutely have to try to contain him as much as possible. Or cut him off from his teammates.

I prefer that we defend hard on him so that he doesn’t score too much.

Offensively, we have to look for our interiors, finally.

The weak point of this Canadian team is the interior sector.

Dillon Brooks is forced to defend on an interior, on Victor Wembanyama.

However, he is 1m98. There is more than 20 centimeters of difference.

Normally, it is impossible. So we have to press where it hurts them.

(We will also have to) play hard and draw fouls to not let them score easily and not let them get into their rhythm.

It’s simple, if Victor plays far from the basket, we will not win.

If we do not score points inside either by driving or thanks to our interiors, we will never be able to win.

We have to pound them inside.

Otherwise, they are much stronger than us.

Fred Weis announces the colour with frankness, the chances of victory of the French Team are slim.

This should not however prevent Victor Wembanyama and his associates from doing everything to reach the semi-finals of the Olympic Games.
