Police Scotland has recovered a body during the search for Jenny Hastings, the wife of Scottish rugby legend Scott Hastings, who went missing after wild swimming near Edinburgh

A body has been found in the search for Jenny Hastings, the wife of Scottish rugby great Scott Hastings who was reported missing after she went swimming at Wardie Bay in Edinburgh, Scotland on Tuesday (September 3). An official statement from Police Scotland released this afternoon (Saturday, September 7) said that while formal identification was yet to take place, Jenny’s family had been informed.

The statement said: “Around 3.20pm on Saturday, 7 September, 2024, the body of a woman was found in the Hound Point area of South Queensferry. Formal identification is yet to take place but the family of missing woman Jenny Hastings has been informed. There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Jenny was reported missing after going for a wild swim in Wardie Bay in Edinburgh last Tuesday. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said it received a “report of concern” at about 2.45pm, and a helicopter, coastguard rescue teams, lifeboats and other nearby vessels all took part in an extensive search.

However the agency said the search teams failed to find anything, and it was called off at 8.20pm that evening. Jenny’s family, including her husband Scott, a former Scotland rugby union player, also released a statement following her disappearance.

“As many of you know Jenny struggled with her mental health for a number of years and ultimately she was unable to cope on this occasion,” the statement said. “It appears that she wished to end her suffering in what was a regular and healing place for her. She loved the water but unfortunately, her mind was not in a place of safety.

“The Hastings family are absolutely heartbroken. We miss our Jenny. She leaves a gaping hole in all our hearts and hope that she is returned to us safely so that we can celebrate her remarkable life.”

They also launched the 100 Streets Challenge to encourage people to feel less alone and to boost their mental wellbeing with exercise.

Scott, who is the younger brother of former Scotland rugby captain Gavin, won 65 caps as a centre for the the Scotland international team between 1986 and 1997. In May 2022, he revealed he had been given a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and was undergoing chemotherapy to treat it. He told fans his cancer was treatable and not life-threatening.

At the time, he said: “My cancer is very treatable and non life-threatening. Thanks for all your supportive messages that are helping me get through my chemo. I am halfway through treatment which is going well apart from hair!”.
