Breanna Stewart’s and Napheesa Collier’s Unrivaled League is generating a lot of steam before it starts in January next year and athletes are looking forward to it.
The league is expected to solve the off-season issues for WNBA athletes who look to ply their trade internationally.
Though the league has capitalized on big names such as Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers, one Chicago Sky star must be feeling FOMO for not being offered a contract. And she exposed the league on Monday when she came out to express her disappointment.
“Just for clarification because I continuously keep getting asked, I was not invited to unrivaled. I didn’t get picked 🙃,” Chicago Sky star Chennedy Carter expressed on Monday through her X account.
Though Carter was drafted as the fourth overall pick in the 2020 WNBA draft, she recently captured the hearts of WNBA fans and became a big name when she scored against the Indiana Fever in a game in June and then pushed Caitlin Clark to the ground after that.
This brought her to instant fame.
While some Clark fans slammed her, others took notice that Carter was the third addition to the rivalry between Reese and Clark in the WNBA.
Carter averages 16.4 points per game with 2.9 rebounds per game and 2.7 assists per game and thus she deserves to be in the league considering her decent performances.
To drive home the point, her best came against the Las Vegas Aces when she scored 34 points during her last game in July before the Olympics break. Plus, she also has a competitive nature which was seen against Clark, hence, she could be a valuable addition to the new league bringing her share of fans.
Meanwhile, the league comes with other advantages that can help Carter since she plays in Turkish leagues.
The Unrivaled League as mentioned before will start from January next year. It is said to be a great alternative for WNBA stars who look to ply their trade for international leagues in the off-season to earn extra money.
The average salary in the 3*3 league is expected to be somewhere between $250,000, which is fairly good when compared to the WNBA standard.
The league allows players to participate in equity which is another major advantage of the league. Therefore when the Stewie-owned Unrivaled didn’t sign Carter it came off as a surprise for many fans since her close teammate Reese has been signed. And hence, it felt as if Stewart was exposed.
Angel Reese expresses delight at joining Unrivaled
Reese announced her association with the upcoming league through a post in late July. The Chi-Town Barbie had her animated picture on Unrivaled’s official social media networking site X along with the words “305 Barbie.”
She thus became the tenth player and the first WNBA rookie to join the coveted league and hence expressed her excitement for the same. She shared that players wouldn’t have to go overseas and they would have a choice.
Reese expounded being satisfied with the salaries and the format which would also help her develop competitively.
“Earning six figures here in just three months is a game-changer. Plus, 3×3 basketball is something I love. It’s a chance to hone individual skills because the game exposes everything,” Reese stated via Jualia Poe of the Chicago Tribune on Wednesday.
Perhaps, Carter should wait a few days until Stewart contacts her. And she has taken the right steps as per her fans in sending signals to the universe.
Hopefully, Carter too will be included in the league soon and fans will watch her playing in the cash-rich league.
