ou know you’re a true star when other stars look up to you. Such is the case with Sheryl Swoopes, the four-time WNBA champion is the idol of Chicago Sky sensation Angel Reese, who recently reiterated her unconditional admiration for the former Houston Comets star.
Reese has never hidden her admiration for Swoopes. This past September, the Sky forward had the opportunity to speak with her idol on a visit to the Las Vegas Aces. “Tears, laughter and smiles with the GOAT today was much needed. Love you forever @airswoopes22,” Reese said on her Instagram Stories after the emotional encounter.
In a recent visit to Lonzo Ball’s “What an Experience” podcast, Angel underlined her admiration for Swoopes by including her on her Mount Rushmore of women’s basketball. Although, interestingly, she also admitted that her favorite childhood player was someone else.
Reese’s Mount Rushmore
In their recent chat, Ball asked her what her personal Mount Rushmore was to which Chi Barbie replied: “No order. Probably, I’mma say Sheryl Swoopes, I’mma say Candace Parker, I’mma say Diana Taurasi… It’s a lot of great players. I’mma say Lisa Leslie.”
Reese’s Top 4 includes only multi-time WNBA champions. Swoopes won four championship rings, while Parker and Taurasi each won three, and Leslie won two. However, Parker holds a special place in the Sky star’s heart.
In the same interview, Reese admitted that Parker was her childhood idol. Also, last July, after breaking Parker’s then-record for double-doubles, Angel made clear her admiration for the former Los Angeles Spark by saying, “She’s the GOAT.”
At the time, Reese stressed the special relationship she has with Parker, saying that she’s not only been able to speak to her personally, but even to her family.
“I’ve always respected CP3 and I try to take some things from her game and try to add them to mine,” Reese said. “Just being able to be named with an amazing player like that is always going to be special to me,” she admitted.
