Angel Reese turned to the Bible after making WNBA history during the Chicago Sky’s loss against the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday. The star rookie took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a Bible verse that promises rest for the “weary and burdened.”
“Matthew 11:25–30,” Reese wrote.

The verse Reese highlighted reads:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Despite Angel Reese’s historic effort, Sunday’s game concluded with the Chicago Sky suffering an 86-68 loss against the Phoenix Mercury. Reese led the Sky’s losing effort in the game with her double-double performance of 19 points, 20 rebounds, one assist and one steal.
The star rookie had previously broken another record in the Sky’s loss against the Mercury on Thursday. Reese grabbed eight offensive rebounds in the game to secure the record for most offensive rebounds in a single season in Sky franchise history
Angel Reese sends unapologetic message to her critics
While addressing the media ahead of the Chicago Sky’s matchup against the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday, Angel Reese sent a message to the critics and narratives surrounding her rise to stardom in the league.
“Just continue to be unapologetically me. … There’s a lot of negativity, but you see all these people yelling my name. They still love me and the positivity, that gets me to wake up every day and still be me and still be positive. Through the negativity, I know there’s a lot of positivity with that,” Reese said.
Angel Reese has often been highlighted in a negative light for various on and off-the-court narratives. However, the seventh overall pick of the 2024 WNBA draft is having none of it, as she filters the hate and focuses on the positives to fuel her game.
Reese and the Chicago Sky recently released a powerful ad to combat the negativity and have resorted to using AI to block hateful posts from reaching players’ feeds.
With the loss on Sunday, the Chicago Sky have slipped to an 11-16 record as they maintain the eighth position in the standings. They have won five of their last 10 games and have a five-day break before they face the Connecticut Sun on Friday.
