Nearly a year after Angel Reese mysteriously disappeared from LSU women’s basketball’s starting lineup, she has revealed why the two-week sabbatical took place.
Reese was one of the biggest stars in college basketball last year and was seemingly riding high coming off a 2023 national championship.
In the aftermath of a season-opening loss to Colorado, Reese and Mulkey got into a ‘normal’ argument, which directly led to her sitting out the second half of a game against Kent State.
After the game against the Golden Flashes, Mulkey and Reese had a conversation about where she heads from here.
Reasons flooded the internet about why Reese was gone including a suspension for her actions, her grade-point average not making her eligible, or becoming pregnant. None of those were correct.
Angel Reese detailed why she was mysteriously out of LSU’s lineup for two weeks last year
Reese has been on a tear since leaving LSU and is having an incredible WNBA rookie season
‘Me and Kim Mulkey kind of got into it about something, which is normal. After that game, me and her had a conversation and we talked about what’s moving forward,’ Reese said.
‘And it was best for me to take some time off. It was me and coach Mulkey being able to have that kind of relationship.’
Reese cites respect for Mulkey and the national-championship coach letting her take a mental health break.
Reese did return and was dominant for the Tigers’ run back to the Elite Eight, falling to a Caitlin Clark-led Iowa team in her final college game.
Since being drafted by the Chicago Sky in April, Reese has continued her impressive ways, setting the WNBA record for most rebounds in a season.
It’s clear Reese is one of the biggest names in women’s basketball, and without her taking that break, which she clearly views as healthy for her, who knows where it could have led.
Reese now is helping the Sky push for the final postseason spot as the WNBA season winds down.
