6 months ago the NBA All-Star Weekend was made a little more special, thanks to an exclusive competition between Steph Curry and Sabrina Ionescu.
Having established their presence as the best deep-range shooters, the duo got the chance to prove their worth against each other by competing in the first-of-its-kind three-point challenge.
Now, with star rookie Caitlin Clark set to probably become the face of it, the gravitas of such a stunning competition happening was recently touched upon by Sabrina.
At the ‘Champions of Change’ panel, when asked about the significance of her 3-point challenge against Stephen Curry, Sabrina highlighted that there were “a million reasons” why the competition shouldn’t have even taken place, or at least she wouldn’t have been there to compete.
From feeling anxiety to a potential failure to dwelling on what not giving her best would mean for “the young girl that was watching TV in hopes of wanting to kind of break down her own barriers”, there were many reasons for her to back out. Fortunately, she did not.
“I think being able to see both of us push that fear aside, and like we weren’t scared to fail, and I think when we went up, you know, on there and like I said ‘Shooters just shoot’, ‘If you can shoot, you can shoot,’” Sabrina said at the Fanatics Fest. “We went up there and we shot, and kind of proved to the world that it doesn’t matter where you come from, what league you’re playing in, if you have a talent and you want to work really hard, you can go out and accomplish whatever that is that you want to go out and do.”
Pushing that fear aside allowed Sabrina to give her best and not be overwhelmed by the fact that she was going up against the NBA’s All-Time 3-point leader. Going first, she went on to score 26 points, the exact number that Damian Lillard secured to his name to win the starry 3-point contest.
However, not looking to back down, Curry himself came in hot and scored 29 points with almost 5 seconds left on the clock. The fact that the Warrior secured the win by such a close margin, left everyone quite impressed.
“For us to deliver a show like that, it was perfect,” Steph Curry said after the challenge. “As much excitement as you can build in that short amount of time with two great shooters going at it. This is something we’ll remember for a long time.”

With Sabrina Ionescu having set the foundation, Caitlin Clark may soon join in to leave a bigger impression. The same was speculated back in April by Shams Charania, who stated “At this point Stephen Curry versus Sabrina Ionescu is very likely for next year…I’m told with Caitlin Clark and potentially Klay Thompson to make it 2v2.” A lot changed since the remarks were last made, as Klay parted ways with GSW and his Splash Brother.
However, when it comes to leading the 3p contest experiment against the WNBA star, a reunion may be in the works.
Even before she joined the WNBA, Caitlin Clark established records that beat Stephen Curry and other star players. Before she completed her college tenure, the then-Iowa Hawkeyes player made her 163rd three-pointer to surpass the earlier records set by both Steph Curry and Darius McGhee. Recently, she reached the ranks of both the Warriors legend and MJ by becoming another rookie from both leagues to record 29 points, 5 rebounds, and 10 assists on 70% true shooting, and on multiple occasions.
Therefore, if anyone is a worthy contender to team up with Sabrina Ionescu, then it is Caitlin Clark. As for Sabrina herself, while the previous loss may or may not have diminished her appetite to compete again, she has found a strong voice of support in the form of NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
Adam Silver urges Sabrina Ionescu for a ‘rematch’ against Steph Curry!
The 2025 All-Star Weekend will be the responsibility of the Warriors, as it will be held at the iconic Chase Center. Therefore, this gives the perfect opportunity for Stephen Curry to bring the 3-point contest back, with Sabrina and even Clark joining. The chances of it happening are high, as it is not only something that fans want but also a desire of the NBA commissioner. During the the same panel discussion at the Fanatics Fest, Adam Silver turned towards Sabrina and said “There’s gotta be a rematch in San Francisco!”
As the audience and the host gave their approval of the statement, Silver was even willing to agree to the WNBA star’s request for a second round by stating “We may need another round, but we will work on that.” Apart from the emotional aspect, the league’s commissioner may also be wishing for a rematch from a business aspect as well. After all, according to TNT, the viewership during the Curry-Ionescu shootout reached 5.4 million viewers, while the rest of the All-Star Weekend events averaged 4.6 million viewers.
With there being an increase in viewership in WNBA games since Caitlin Clark’s entry, bringing in the rookie would only help the numbers, wouldn’t it?
