Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese has quickly made a name for herself as the WNBA’s double-double queen, consistently setting records in the statistic.
She’s gained a fan in NBA legend Kevin Garnett, who likened her to another former NBA power forward.
Highlighting Angel Reese’s knack for grabbing offensive rebounds, Garnett noted that the rookie is showing flashes of Shawn Marion, who averaged 8.7 rebounds including 2.3 offensive boards per game throughout his 16-year career.
Garnett shared this insight in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Yup… I see it. (Angel Reese) got an elite 2nd jump on the glass like (Shawn Marion).. 20 boards and damn near 20 points? Face up game looked legit last night too 🤦🏾♂️ 💯”
With this performance, Reese became the fastest player in WNBA history to notch 20 double-doubles in a single season.
This game marked only the seventh time in her 27-game rookie season that she shot at least 50% from the field.
Critics have pointed to Reese’s inefficiency despite her role as a post player, as she’s currently shooting 39.8% from the field.
Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have contrasting records against the Phoenix Mercury
The Phoenix Mercury, currently ranked sixth this season, are led by stars Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and Kahleah Copper.
The two highly anticipated young teams, Angel Reese’s Chicago Sky and Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever, have experienced contrasting outcomes against the Mercury.
Clark has guided the Fever to a season sweep of the Mercury, improving each time they faced them.
She tallied 15 points and 12 assists in a six-point win during their first matchup, followed by a 20-point, 13-assist performance in a nine-point win in their second meeting and capped it with 29 points and 10 assists in their third encounter.
In contrast, the Sky suffered two blowout losses to the Mercury.
In their first matchup, the Mercury dominated with an 85-65 victory.
They continued their strong performance over the weekend with another decisive win, 86-68.
As of now, the Sky sit eighth in the standings with an 11-16 record, while the Fever are seventh at 13-15 and the Mercury hold sixth with a 15-13 record.
