In just a few months, Victor Wembanyama has become a must-have in San Antonio.

Adopted by the fans, the former Mets pivot recently offered them a beautiful declaration of love, in an interview with Hugo Décrypte.

For over 20 years, the Spurs have always had a deep connection with French basketball.

First there was Tony Parker of course, whose number 9 is now hanging from the ceiling of the AT&T Center.

After the point guard, others like Boris Diaw, Nando De Colo and Ian Mahinmi have also worn the black and white jersey.

Now, it is Victor Wembanyama who embodies the new French generation.

Drafted in first position by the Texans a little over a year ago, when he was coming off a lost final in the French championship, the Alien literally broke everything in his path.

Even his main opponent Chet Holmgren ended up giving up in the race for Rookie of the Year, as the pivot was so monstrous from the beginning of January. 21 points, 10 rebounds and almost 4 blocks on average, it’s just crazy.

Without much surprise, Wemby has become the figurehead of his franchise and finds himself adored by local fans for his performances.

It’s never easy with such outsized expectations, but the guy likes to take on challenges and he has succeeded brilliantly.

The lottery, I followed it live from Paris, and the reaction inside my head was the same (as that of the Spurs fans, editor’s note).

I really felt connected to this city and I already had the feeling even before the lottery that this was where I would land and that I would want to go. So there is no pressure.

I always told myself that no matter where I landed, it would be the best place, but the fact that it is San Antonio makes things much simpler because the enthusiasm there is incredible, the fans and even the inhabitants of the city, everyone is a fan so they really elevate their players, they lift them up and they really have a love for the franchise, the players, which makes this place really comfortable.
