In 1992, a great page in the history of international basketball was written with the advent of the Dream Team.

That said, a legend of the league admitted to having been surprised to be part of the American selection during these Olympic Games in Barcelona.

Right now, Team USA is defending the colors of Uncle Sam’s country on French territory.

In their eyes, the Olympic Games obviously represent a lot, but if it means so much to these players who have nevertheless won almost everything for the most part in the NBA, it actually goes back to 1992. Indeed, the Barcelona tournament marked a turning point for international basketball.

It was during this year that the famous Dream Team was born.

This team included the greatest American superstars of the time.

When they entered the court in Spain, the show was guaranteed and a crushing defeat was already promised to their opponents.

However, in an episode of Legends of Sport, a certain John Stockton confided that he was stunned by his selection.

An unexpected selection in the Dream Team

Oddly enough, my first memory is getting the call.

I remember getting the call and I thought it was a joke when I was asked to join the Dream Team. I remember saying, “I’m going to have to consult with the team, I’m going to have to consult with my wife, and check other things.”

I remember there was someone else on the other end of the line, it was Rod Thorn.

I called back, obviously, in a hurry and I was very happy to be asked to be part of this team.

The Dream Team included some of the biggest names in league history such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley and many others.

Although he was considered one of the best point guards of his time, John Stockton had no idea that he would have the chance to be part of this legendary team.

He ended up playing a small rotation role and accumulated 2.8 points, 2.0 assists and 0.3 rebounds in 7.3 minutes on average in the 4 games he played. But most importantly, he completed this great adventure by winning an Olympic gold medal.

And while the Jazz legend had been content with limited playing time during the Barcelona tournament, she played an important role during the Americans’ victory at the Sydney Olympics in 1996. Now, Team USA 2024 will try to honor the Dream Team 92 by winning the most prestigious international competition again, and it is in Paris that it will all happen.

The Dream Team is surely one of the most legendary teams in the history of sport.
