“I’ve had enough of Jimmy Butler. Every 5 seconds, he wants to be traded,” said radio personality Chris Russo recently, as the tension between the NBA star and the Miami Heat continues to dominate the headlines. Even after Pat Riley shunned any trade rumors regarding his veteran player, the latter himself made it clear- his days with the Florida side are now behind him. Once JB blurted “I want my joy back… I want to play with a dominant team,” he was suspended for 7 games. As opinions continue to be doled out, Butler’s former competitor now endorses a shift. After all, his actions are probably speaking louder than words.
Melo hosted 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, and as the topic of discussion shifted towards Butler, the 10x All-Star admitted he had seen a change in the Miami veteran. He highlighted Jimmy as someone who worked extremely hard and was disciplined. However, Anthony believes the persona has gone. Therefore, the podcast host seemed quite confident when he stated, “Pat (Riley), the best thing to do, is just part ways man, like because this s–t, this is gonna get ugly because Jimmy is not a guy that’s gonna back down. You got too strong force, in his way, and then if you don’t trade him during the deadline, that Miami s–t gonna get nasty.”
Melo’s co-host, Monica McNutt, attempted to argue that the Miami Heat could still find a different and ‘actual’ resolution. However, the former player said again, “The only actual resolution is to trade… We gotta dissolve, we gotta solve this.”
As highlighted by Shams Charania, tensions between Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat squad have persisted since last spring. It all began with the announcement that the Heat would not extend his contract before the 2024-25 season. If the same hadn’t occurred, then he could’ve received at least a 2-year, $113 million ext. But this news accompanied the report, by Charania, that the Heat “has leaned more into their young core, rising core of Bam Adebayo, their All-Star, and Tyler Herro”.
So, this is what happened, instead of the Heat giving Butler the championship-contending roster he needed. In light of this, when Butler was recently asked if he could get his joy back on the court with the Miami side, he responded: “Probably not.”
So, amidst the ongoing suspension, Miami Heat’s management said they are actively searching for a trade deal. However, if it comes to Melo, there is only one spot that the front office should focus on.
Ever since the ‘Jimmy Butler Trade Rumors’ made waves, several teams have come out as contenders for an acquisition. While the Warriors is one team that Butler can call his next home, another is the Suns. As highlighted by Kendrick Perkins, Kevin Durant and Co. would even offer the small forward a 2-year $121M extension. Furthermore, the ex-player believes that the bond between Butler and KD would only benefit the Suns squad. Despite this, Carmelo Anthony made it clear that he wanted to explore another route.
“I’m sending Jimmy to the Lakers. Best-fit Lakers,” said Melo. “You got a veteran team, you got veteran guys on your team. Bron knows how to f–k with you, he knows what you gonna bring to the team. They need defense. You could bring that. You bring toughness and you can go get it.”

Pairing LeBron James and Jimmy Butler would certainly be appealing. But the King is 40 and may not be in the NBA for long. Trading D’Lo and Maxwell Lewis for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton gave the Lakers some breathing room. After all, it prevented them from crossing the second apron. Giving Butler the extension deal he needs would only worsen the situation for the Lakers, financially.
Barely 10 days have passed since the new year. A new storyline has already added drama to the season. Wherever Jimmy Butler goes next, there’s no denying- his legacy with the Heat would be slightly tarnished now, amidst his rough and unceremonious exit.
