Draymond Green’s Personal Sacrifice for Jonathan Kuminga Will Eliminate LeBron-Warriors Rumors Forever

The question has been knocking on the Warriors‘ door since the beginning of this season. With this being a contract year for Jonathan Kuminga, what does the future hold? In his public confessions, Steve Kerr has previously spoken about being content with the fourth-year forward coming off the bench. However, as far as personal goals are concerned, it’s vital for JK to start and get the opportunities necessary to earn a contract. And in doing so, his vet teammate, Draymond Green, is more than willing to help.

Now thirteen years into the business, the veteran has learned the cruel nature of the NBA. Another thing Green has picked up is “you can never not do what you started off to”. Through his decorated career, the motivation to become someone, as a second-round pick, lit a flame under him. But now, standing as a franchise legend and an integral part of the roster, Green feels it’s time to give back.

“I also know this business like the back of my hand. And so Jonathan Kuminga is in year 3, which means he’s extension eligible this summer. Excuse me, he’s in year 4. And, you know, he can be, he’ll be restricted for free agent this summer. And so you look at it from the business side, he has to get the opportunity to show his worth… And he’s earned the opportunity. He’s more than earned the opportunity,” the Warriors floor general said on The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis.

Draymond Green is confident in his role with the Bay at this point. Even if he does come off the bench, the veteran is super-secure about his vitality. “At the end of the day, I’m going to finish again. I’m going to close again. I’m going to be in when it matters,” assured the four-time NBA champion. But at this junction, Dray understands that every game means something more for JK.

The Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga’s representation have been at odds regarding the value of his extension. Naturally, these disagreements made him the hottest target to trade. Most recently, that included a rumor of possibly bringing LeBron James to the Warriors! But even if they can’t meet eyes, Green doesn’t want to be a hindrance in the way of a younger player’s ‘opportunity’.

If not for David Lee, maybe he wouldn’t have had the chance to stake his claim. And now, the Warriors veteran wants to do the same for Kuminga, even if it means not being a starter anymore. “I’m at the point of my career now where I am 1000% a starter in the NBA. I know that, not tripping on that at all. But, if this is going to help Jonathan Kuminga, and this is going to help this team, then let’s check it out. And if it don’t pan out, we always know we can go back to me starting at the 4 or 5. Like, we can always go back to that. But let’s see what he got. He deserved that,” Draymond Green said about Kuminga on his podcast.

The Warriors are beginning to trust Jonathan Kuminga

It’s not just Draymond Green who is starting to take notice of JK. Albeit, he does take the most prominent role, having accepted one off the bench in the Warriors’ first game against the Timberwolves. However, even Steve Kerr, who often speaks about the 22-year-old being apt for the second unit, was stirred by his recent performances.

“The idea is we’re trying to make the most of Jonathan’s ability to get downhill, to get him more time. He and Wiggs last night were fantastic. So we’re searching for ways to get those guys more involved and not wear down Draymond and Steph,” said the revered HC.

The shift in energy and harmonious confidence around the team is beginning to reflect on Kuminga’s happiness. A few games ago against the Rockets, he had a career night scoring 33 points. Both Curry and Green celebrated his big buckets, a gesture that meant a lot to the young gun. Moreover, with a renewed sense of belonging, his numbers are beginning to improve.

This month, the Bay area forward has started all games and is having arguably the best stretch of his career. He is the second-highest scorer on the team besides Stephen Curry, averaging 21.3 points per game. His three-point shooting has also starkly improved as regular opportunities come his way.

For JK, having a place in the starting five signifies the notion of confidence. The two-way phenom is beginning to tap into his true element. Playing with ferocity and high energy, the 22-year-old has become an integral part of the Warriors. As the team looks for a resurgence, Kuminga will play an influential part. And Draymond Green is willing to relish the successes of the Warriors youngster.
